NorthEast Folk 'n Roots
If you're not doing it already, resolve in 2008 to get out and hear live local music. As Jonathan Perry said in The Boston Globe 12/28, you owe it to yourself to investigate why the Boston area's "musical landscape" is "so consistently exciting, surprising and gratifying."
- Dennis Brennan, 1/2/08
Everything folk: roots, Americana, blues, bluegrass, newgrass, traditional, folk rock, blues, R&B and Celtic music and allied forms of dance happening from the greater Boston / Cambridge / Somerville area out to New England and into New York and eastern Canada.
Postings of general interest are welcome, but please limit discussion and events to folk and roots music in the Northeast. Take discussion of pop and other forms of music to other Going groups.

WOODY GUTHRIE'S FREEDOM SONGS + -
Conventionally known for his championing of the poor white Dust Bowl migrants, Guthrie also left an extensive body of songs condemning Jim Crow segregation, race hatred and racial fascism. Most of these songs were never recorded, but they are the legacy of Guthrie’s own personal transformation from a casual Oklahoma racist in his youth to a committed civil rights activist working and singing with the likes of Lead Belly, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee and Paul Robeson in the 1940s and 50s. It is at once a harrowing and uplifting legacy, reflected in such songs as 'The Blinding of Isaac Woodard', 'The Killing of the Ferguson Brothers', 'Harriet Tubman' and 'All You Fascists Bound to Lose'.
Will's original presentation, WOODY GUTHRIE: HARD TIMES AND HARD TRAVELLIN', is a live programme that sets the songs of Woody Guthrie in the context of the American 1930s - the Dust Bowl, the Depression, the New Deal and the state of popular music itself. In the presentation, Will brings such hard-hitting Guthrie songs as 'Vigilante Man', 'Pretty Boy Floyd' and 'I Ain't Got No Home' into conversation with other relevant songs - from Joe Hill's 'The Preacher and the Slave' to 'Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?'. These renditions, buttressed by detailed historical commentary, exemplify the blending of music and radical politics that marks Guthrie's most powerful and evocative work.
WILL KAUFMAN is a Professor of American Literature and Culture at the University of Central Lancashire, England. He comes from a musical family - his brother, Steve Kaufman, is one of America's most celebrated bluegrass guitarists (that's him flatpicking the guitar and mandolin on these Woody Guthrie songs). In 2008, Will was awarded the Woody Guthrie Research Fellowship from the BMI Foundation and the Woody Guthrie Foundation.

Bob Martin, Saturday, Shirley + -
Bob Martin (born in 1942 in Lowell, Massachusetts) is an American folk singer/songwriter. While attending Suffolk UniversityBoston during the 1960s, he was influenced by the Cambridge folk scene and played at the Nameless Coffeehouse, Club 47 (now Club Passim), and other folk clubs. Emerging from the same New England city as Jack Kerouac, Martin was heavily influenced by the beat poet's writing and career. It was in 1972, fifteen years after Kerouac's On the Road was published, that Bob Martin made his first album Midwest Farm Disaster for RCA Records in Nashville. He worked closely with Chet Atkins, an executive at RCA at the time and many exceptional studio musicians including drummer Kenneth Buttrey, a key player on Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde album. Due to personnel changes at the label and the onset of disco, Martin's career was not given priority.
In 1974, he "dropped out" of pop culture and moved to a farm in West Virginia with his family. He continued to write songs, poetry, novels and pursued his muse through various artistic endeavors. In 1982, he recorded his second album, Last Chance Rider for June Appal Recordings of Whitesburg, KY. The record was recognized as one of the top three folk albums in the country by the National Association of Independent Record Distributors. Martin however chose to play music on his own terms and didn't pursue the music business as a way of life.
It was another ten years, until the release of his third album in 1997. This album, The River Turns the Wheel, contained backing vocals by Bill Morrissey and Cormac McCarthy and was on Martin's own label, Riversong Records. This may be considered Bob Martin's most commercially successful album to date. Despite his passivity toward the music biz, "The River Turns The Wheel" was noticed by music critics around the country. The CD reached number sixteen on the Gavin Americana Chart and was chosen one of the top ten albums in 1997 by Brad Kava of The San Jose Mercury News. Dave Perry of The Lowell Sun chose it as the best folk album of 1997 and Tom Flannery of The Electric City News also picked it as the best CD of that year. He toured nationally and opened for Merle Haggard in 1999.
Martin didn't wait quite so long to release his fourth album. "Next To Nothin" was put out on Riversong Records in 2000, and received more rave critical reviews and extensive airplay on Americana radio programs around the country.
In 2006 Martin completed his first non-fiction novel and he continues to perform nationally and internationally.
Sat., Nov. 22, 2008 @ 8:00 pm.
Bob Martin – Bob will be taping this show for an upcoming Live Album. Come and be part of the record.
With a performing career spanning almost forty years, Martin is one of the best kept secrets in the folk music world. He was a regular on the circuit in 1969, when he was "discovered" at Gerde's Folk City in NYC and recorded his 1st album Midwest Farm Disaster for RCA in Nashville. He worked closely with Chet Atkins and many exceptional studio musicians, but due to personnel changes Martin's career was not given priority. In 1974, he "dropped out" and moved to a mountain home in WV. He continued to write music, poetry, novels and various other artistic endeavors. In 1982, he recorded his 2nd album, Last Chance Rider. It was recognized as one of the top three folk albums in the country by the National Association of Independent Record Distributors. Martin however chose to play music on his own terms and didn't pursue the music business as a way of life. He released his 3rd album in 1997, The River Turns the Wheel on his own label. This may be his most commercially successful album to date. It reached number sixteen on the Gavin Americana Chart and was chosen one of the top ten albums in 1997 by Brad Kava of The San Jose Mercury News. Dave Perry of The Lowell Sun chose it as the best folk album of 1997 and Tom Flannery of The Electric City News also picked it as the best release of that year. Martin toured nationally and opened for Merle Haggard in 1999. Next To Nothin' was released in 2000 to more rave critical reviews and extensive airplay on folk, country and Americana radio programs around the country.
"If he had been given the right opportunities, and received the right breaks, he could have been bigger than Dylan." - Charles Laquidara - Legendary Boston DJ
"He is really one of the genius songwriters of the Northeast." - Dave Palmetier - WUMB-FM, Boston.
Opener: Davey O - Armed with a classic troubadour's Gibson guitar and a powerful-yet-sensitive voice (often compared to Don Henley, Jason Isbell, and Son Volt's Jay Farrar) singer-songwriter Davey O's award-winning songs speak of love, hope, loss and the vulnerability of the human experience while offering an easy blend of Folk, Alt-Country and Americana.
Tickets are $12 advance and $16 day of show.

Odetta hospitalized with kidney failure + -
Published November 14, 2008 01:11 PM
By LiveDaily Staff /
Odetta Gordon, who is often called "The Voice of the Civil Rights Movement," remains in a New York City hospital, suffering from kidney failure.
The legendary folk singer, who is 77 years old, entered the hospital last Saturday (11/8) for a check-up and IV nourishment. However, on Sunday (11/9) evening, she went into kidney failure, according to a statement by her manager.
Doctors are trying to stabilize her system and prevent the weakening of her other organs. She is on dialysis to rid her body of the toxic poisons that have built up due to her failing kidneys. Her doctors said the treatment seems to be slowly working.
Gordon is expected to remain in the ICU Unit for at least another week, according to the statement.
She is coherent and talking, and determined to perform at Barack Obama's Inauguration in January, according to family members.
Her family encourages fans to send cards to Ms. Odetta Gordon; Room #719, 7th Floor ICU Unit; Lenox Hill Hospital; 100 East 77th Street; New York, NY, 10021.

Odetta Hospitalized
Thursday, Nov 13, 2008 11:21AM
Odetta, singer/songwriter known as "The Voice of the Civil Rights Movement," is seriously ill and in a New York hospital with kidney failure, according to a statement from her manager.
Odetta apparently went to the Lenox HIll Hospital over the weekend for a simple IV treatment but had kidney failure Nov. 9 and is listed in critical condition. An active supporter of President-elect Barack Obama, Odetta is determined to sing at his inauguration in January, according to manager Doug Yeager. The full statement follows:
Dear Friends of Odetta,
On behalf of Odetta's adopted daughter Michelle Esrick and her niece Jan Ford (in California), I would like to share with you - Odetta's large extended family of brothers and sisters - the current health crisis in her life. On Saturday, she went into Lenox Hill Hospital for a check-up and IV nourishment. However, on Sunday evening she went into kidney failure, and we were told that the next 24 hours would determine if she would survive.
Miraculously, she made it through that emergency, but is still listed in critical condition. I was on the road when she went in the hospital and rushed back on Sunday. Jan and I are thankful that Michelle was here and has been by Odetta's side every moment of this ordeal.
Odetta believes she is going to sing at Obama's Inauguration, and I believe that is the reason she is still alive. She has a big poster of Barack Obama taped on the wall across from her bed. Her old heart has already outperformed and lasted far beyond the expectations of the heart specialists who treated her in January-March 2007 when she had her last health crisis while touring out West. Now compounded with the kidney failure, the doctors at the hospital are trying to do everything possible to stabilize her system and prevent the weakening of her other organs. They have her on dialysis now to rid the body of the toxic poisons that have built up, and it seems to be slowly working. She is sleeping a lot, but after a dialysis treatment and some food, she is coherent and talking. She is not in pain. We are told that she will be in the ICU Unit for at least another week, and that we'll just have to wait and see after that.
All of you are well aware of Odetta's indomitable spirit. Accordingly, I wouldn't bet against her singing for Barack in January!
If you would like to send a card, I know that she would love to hear from you (address of the hospital is below).
Ms. Odetta Gordon

Warmest regards,
Doug Yeager

11/14: Homegrown String Band (Bull Run, Shirley) + -
Fri. Nov. 14 8 PM
$12 advance cash
$16 day of show
The Homegrown String Band is a 21st century incarnation of the traditional family band. The band consists of Rick and Georgianne Jackofsky and daughters Erica and Annalee, who have been performing at festivals, coffeehouses, schools, and libraries throughout the northeast since 1997. Their repertoire consists of traditional and original music inspired by the rural string bands that recorded during the 1920s and `30s. Many of these early country bands were families who began playing for their own entertainment and later began to perform professionally. The HSB brings their audiences back to a simpler time when families gathered to share their music with friends and neighbors. You will be treated to the sounds of fiddle, guitar, mandolin, clawhammer banjo, banjo uke, dulcimer, and jawharp, as well as some fancy flatfoot dancing. So fasten your seatbelts and hold on to your hats as the Homegrown String Band takes you on a rollicking ride through the sounds of American music, from the driving rhythms of old-time dance tunes to the mournful sounds of mountain ballads and blues. Entertaining and educational for audiences of all ages.
"This family is breathing fresh life into the American folk tradition at a time when our nation's roots are so often forgotten." - Sarah Craig, Manager, Caffe Lena
Once again ranking as one of the most requested bands on the A.F.B.A.'s festival questionnaire." - AFBA bluegrass festival, Wind Gap PA
Opener: Nate Smith - Cutting new stuff from the old folk scene cloth for many years, Nate has come up with some funny and some not-so-funny viewing angles on life today. There's a pinch of old-timey banjo, some straightforward harmonica and, of course, plenty of good-old familiar acoustic guitar.

BCMFest west, 11/14 + -
On Friday, Nov. 14, a group of area Celtic musicians will stage a benefit concert for BCMFest at The Westford Museum. The event, which begins at 8 p.m. (doors open at 7:15) is a reprise of last year's successful "BCMFest Goes West(ford)" show.
Featured performers will be:
Doug Lamey and Cliff McGann—This duo, part of the popular band The Boston Kiltics, play in the driving, rollicking Cape Breton fiddle tradition that has inspired the likes of Jerry Holland, Natalie MacMaster and Ashley MacIssac, to name a few. Lamey is the grandson of Bill Lamey, who was a major figure in the Greater Boston Cape Breton/Scottish music scene for more than three decades. McGann, in addition to his fine instrumental work on guitar and whistle, is known for his enviable trove of songs, both contemporary and traditional, and his entertaining stories.
Katie McNally–A former runner-up Junior National Scottish Fiddle Champion, McNally has performed with and opened up for such notable musicians as Hanneke Cassel, Brittany Haas, and Laura Risk, and appeared at such popular venues as Club Passim and The Cantab Lounge.
Eric Eid-Reiner—Born into a musical family, Eid-Reiner is a talented piano player whose influences range from traditional fiddle tunes to jazz, from Jewish music to modern folk, from ragtime to the blues. He is particularly in demand as a contra dance musician, and is a member of the up-and-coming band Matching Orange.
Eric McDonald—McDonald's prowess on mandolin extends across several different kinds of music, including not only Celtic but bluegrass/old-timey, folk-rock and contra dance (he plays with Eric Eid-Reiner in Matching Orange). McDonald, also a solid singer and guitarist, has performed with Jaded Mandolin, Ari & Mia Friedman and The Jess Yoakum Band, among others.
Sarah Collins—Equally accomplished as a classical violinist, Collins is one of a number of superb young musicians who have developed their Celtic fiddling abilities at the Boston Harbor Scottish Fiddle Camp and Sierra Fiddle Camp (run by famed Scots fiddler Alasdair Fraser).
McNally, the major planner and coordinator for the first "BCMFest Goes West(ford)" concert as well as this year's edition, says that given the success of last year's concert, "it seemed only natural to hold another BCMFest fundraiser at the Westford Museum.
"There's a huge folk music following north of Boston that often times gets overlooked and because of the show, we were able to draw in a whole new crowd to the festival in January," she explains. "I'm so happy to able to help a grassroots organization like BCMFest flourish, and I hope the Westford show becomes a permanent fixture in the festival's schedule."
Admission to the concert is $15, $5 for teens and free for under age 12. All proceeds benefit BCMFest, which will mark its sixth anniversary on Jan. 9-10, 2009 [Information about the Boston Celtic Music Fest is available at bcmfest. com]. Reservations for the concert are recommended: Call (978) 692-5550 or e-mail Museum@Westford.com. For directions, see www. westford. com/museum/.
