8:45pm: The Accident That Led Me to the World FRI 9/5 to SUN 9/7
7:30pm
Films at the Gate 2008
at Vacant Lot near Chinatown Gate, about 10 Hudson St, Boston (Chinatown)
FREE
Hot martial-arts action under the stars or under the clouds. I didn't see info about a possible rain night for Saturday, but maybe the storm will have already passed.
I wrote about it in my blog. All movies are presented with the original Chinese audio (including English subtitles), which must improve all of the screenings. There are some folding chairs, but you're encouraged to bring your own seat if you really want it. And you don't need to bring enough crab rangoon to share with everyone...
FRI 9/5 to SUN 9/7
All Day
Brimfield Antique Show
at Brimfield Fairgrounds, take Mass Pike West to Route 20 West (Exit 9), Brimfield
Most FREE, some $5
Every year this little Western MA town becomes engorged with antique sellers and hunters. Quite a spectacle, and you may spend a lot of money -- or find the deal of your life!
I'm thinking about going, so I found this site with some tips.
FRI 9/5 to SUN 9/7
Various Times
Boston Charter Day
Various Locations
FREE
There's an emphasis on Native American history this year.
FRI 9/5 to SUN 9/7
8pm (SUN: 2pm)
" Cloud 9"
at Zack Box Theatre, Downstairs, 8 The Fenway, Boston ( Boston Conservatory)
FREE
The students are coming back, and free theatre abounds. In this two-act play, one half of the action occurs in colonial Africa of the 19th century and concludes in present-day (relatively) London. Because theatre can be experimental, some characters seem to travel in time. I wouldn't get hung up on that, except perhaps to see it as comment on the issues of gender and sexuality over history.

SAT 9/6
4pm to 8pm

Feat: DJ Red Foxx
at Karmaloop, 160 Newbury St, Boston (Back Bay)
FREE
Just hang out and have fun. Watch some live art.
Boost Mobile will be giving out info, so I'm guessing there'll be some refreshments of some kind...
SAT 9/6
9:30pm
Magic Christian, Muck and The Mires, Parallel Project, Fox Pass
at Middle East - Upstairs, 472 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$9 advance / $10 day of show / 18+
Okay. So Magic Christian includes the guitarist & songwriter of Flamin' Groovies, bassist of The Plimsouls, and drummer of Blondie!

SUN 9/7
8:00pm
Devil Music Ensemble, " Red Heroine": Silent Film w/ Live Music
at Union Square Plaza
FREE
New - Rain Date.
This is a real gem, because it's a 70-year-old silent film, which is one of the oldest surviving martial-arts movies. Devil Music Ensemble have provided live soundtracks for many silents. They're in the middle of a tour with "Red Heroine" (and includes a stop in Chinatown on Friday night.) I doubt the music will sound much like the original score, but this should be a cool experience.
One of the DME guys described their score to The Phoenix as, "a blend of Chinese folk music and ’70s-era kung fu funk." Alright!

Atwoods now charging a cover?
From the current Peter Mulvey Newsletter
If you happen to live in Massachusetts, I'm stealing into the region for a short flurry of activity: Tuesday I'll be at Atwoods Tavern in Somerville, playing with Goody and Mike and Lou (the band on most of my records). ...

TOUR SCHEDULE 8/19 CAMBRIDGE, MA Atwood's Tavern 617.864.2792 9pm, $10
===============
Does anyone know if this is a one time charge due to the musicians coming from out of town/added expenses, or is this a policy change?

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)
at Boston Playwrights Theatre, 949 Comm Ave, Boston (BU campus)
FREE
Yes, I know. More free Shakespeare, but this is a funny retooling of all his plays in about 97 minutes. This play is supposed to be hilarious, and the people putting it on have done some very cool projects in the past (and are doing this and will do more cool plays)...
No reservations are needed, but seating is limited. At least it can't be rained out.
FRI 8/15 to SUN 8/17

" Romeo and Juliet"
at Somerville Community Growing Center, 22 Vinal Ave, Somerville (near Union Sq)
FREE
A newish group called "The Lonesome Coyote Theater" presents a minimalist outdoor production of the classic play with no set or costumes. Does true love really need that stuff?
Update: I went last night, and this was exceptionally good! The way it's presented brings the play to life in a way that speaks to a contemporary audience. Tip: Bring a blanket or lawn chairs.
(Unfortunately when they said "no costumes", the women were still wearing clothes...)

9pm
+/-, Broken River Prophet, Animal Hospital, Ba-Na-Nas
at Middle East - Upstairs, 472 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$9 advance / $10 day of show / 18+
+/- and Broken River Prophet are very good. Am not so excited by Animal Hospital and Ba-Na-Nas, but there's a Cupcake Happy Hour from 9pm to 10pm (while supplies last) from Somerville's Kickass Cupcakes!! (Ba-Na-Nas should be entertaining, and Animal Hospital is on the opposite side of the "energy" spectrum...)
SAT 8/16
Black Mosettes (Midnight), The Territories (11pm), The Lyres (10pm), Ted Wyman (9pm)
at Cantab Lounge / Club Bohemia, 738 Mass Ave, Cambridge (Central Sq)
$8
The Lyres can be enough reason to go to a rock show, and Black Mosettes sound pretty good.
SAT 8/16 and SUN 8/17
